Overview
SEISMIC Phase Two has several planned events and meetings, both in-person and remote. We strongly believe in-person events play an important role in establishing the social ties needed for any successful collaboration. This is especially true when the community is diverse; coming from many institutions, disciplines, and roles in higher education, with various interests, goals, and identities. At the same time, remote meetings allow for progress to continue to be made, reduce the burden on individuals to travel, and can often reach broader audiences. We have learned many lessons from our in-person and virtual events over the years that we will bring to SEISMIC Phase Two. Read below to learn the purpose of each activity and how you can be involved.
Kick Off Event (Spring 2026)
Our in-person 2-Day Kickoff Event in Ann Arbor, MI, will be held May 19–22, 2026, and will launch disciplinary teams focused on course assessment reform. This event will be open to institutions who join SEISMIC this fall. In particular, if you are a STEM instructor interested in making changes to the assessments you use in your courses, we encourage you to save the dates and talk with your local SEISMIC contacts about attending this event. As we establish our participating institutions this fall, we’ll share updates so you know if you are at a SEISMIC institution and who you can contact for local SEISMIC questions. We will also have some travel funds available to support individual attendance at this event. More to come!
Reading Club – open to public
Throughout the year we will offer several opportunities to join with others in some collaborative reading. Our next reading is Grading for Growth: A Guide to Alternative Grading Practices that Promote Authentic Learning and Student Engagement in Higher Education by David Clark and Robert Talbert. This book is available online for free through many university libraries. Please join our SEISMIC Slack workspace and our #book-club channel to participate.
SEISMIC Seminar – open to SEISMIC institutions only
A monthly virtual meeting to connect with others in SEISMIC, learn about current projects, discuss recent relevant literature, and generally maintain the SEISMIC community.
Speaker Series – open to public
Collaboration-wide speaker events – SEISMIC institutions will rotate who hosts in-person speakers and we will aim to make most presentations publicly available online. You can recommend speakers and topics for the Speaker Series using the button below.
